When I was 16 years old I had a
Summer job as a Floor Guard in a
roller rink. I was the guy in the
referee shirt whose job it was to
keep people from playing tag and
skating backwards. My 2nd week on
the job the DJ called in sick and
the manager told me to get in the DJ
booth. After telling him I never
DJed before, he told me I had about
10 minutes to figure it out. “Gulp!”
After figuring out the basics, such
as how to actually get sound out of
the speakers, I spent the rest of
that summer discovering how song
choice affected the mood of the
crowd and how beats per minute
affected the speed of the skaters.
Little did I know at that young age
that those same skills would come in
very handy for throwing dark dance
parties!
Fast forward a number of years later
to 2003. With the help of a very
good friend, I created Labyrinth, a
weekly dark dance party in
D.U.M.B.O, Brooklyn with DJ Father
Jeff and DJ Subvert as my DJs and I
as the promoter. After a year the
event ended and I was asked to join
Contempt, the hugely respected
not-for-profit event, and I eagerly
accepted! It was at Contempt, now in
its 13th year, wear I honed my
skills as a promoter and became an
occasional DJ.
In February, 2009 everything came
full circle when I brought the
Labyrinth event back, this time to
NYC as a monthly event, and with a
few changes; I asked Sir William
Wells of New Goth City to host and
asked DJ Subvert of Contempt to
co-DJ with me. Both parties agreed!
Labyrinth took on a life of its own
and has become more successful than
I ever imagined.
While continuing to work with
Labyrinth and Contempt, I have a few
other projects cooking for the
future. I own any success I achieve
to my friends, fellow club goers,
and fellow DJs. I sincerely thank
everyone for their support!
