SKULLZIE SEZ:
From the
ashes of the tragically fallen
Red Party
,
DJ Templar, after months of
absence, returned to the scene
with an event created along with
Audio Engineer and Producer
Stephen Collins, DJ Bride of
Wire, and with Lady Mandana at
the door. Some know the venue,
The Sullivan Room, as typically
a House/Techno club on most
nights; however, due to a recent
renovation of the decor, one
would think this venue was
tailor-made for the Goth scene!
So much so, in fact, that New
Goth City's very own Sir William
Welles has taken note to some
design elements he would like to
adopt into his own Dark Bar
venture. There are plush
Victorian styled chairs and
couches; the wall are decorated
in a lavish grotto-esque
fashion; there are plenty of
"Nooks and Crannies" for some
dark, private conversation; a
long slab bar...and best of
all...an extremely intense sound
system! LOUD? HELL YA! WHAT?!? I
CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! THIS PLACE IS
KICK ASS AND MY EAR DRUMS ARE
BLEEDING! TOO COOL!!! The fact
of the matter is that the
Sullivan Room has these large
speakers pointed outward from
the dance floor and onto the
sitting area and the bar. It's
great sound, yes! But I fear a
tad too much for the layout of
the room...but I guess that's
why there's a little separate
sitting room behind the DJ booth
for those with the sensitive
ears.
And just when you thought you
were having a fine time, with
familiar scene faces, drinking
some Absinthe...BAM!!! Here come
the Go-Go dancers to spice
things up! Now...I'm not going
to lie to you...they are HAWT
(btw: more thigh-high stockings,
please! Thank you.)...but after
a while it just seems to
resemble a strip club
act...without the actual
striping...and some people have
expressed that they are somewhat
of an ill-fit to the place...but
the camera-clicking public sure
do love snapping pictures of
them...and they sure do love to
pose! HAWWWT! Moving on...
The music. Helmed by DJ Templar
and DJ Bride of Wire, the music
selection actually finds a way
to run through the entire gamut
of music in the Goth scene. You
have it all! As the flyer puts
it: Pure Goth, EBM, Dark Dance,
and Deathrock. Wow! That's quite
a range. And with skilled Guest
DJs such as DJ Jet, DJ Xris
Smack, and the other usual
suspects, you are sure to feel
their flavor as the music
progresses from one set to the
next. There is something here
for everyone.
The drawback. The one drawback
to Underworld is its held night.
Bi-weekly is a wise choice...I'm
not arguing that...but since the
venue is used to a much
different crowd on
Thursdays/Fridays/Saturdays, you
almost get the sense that
Underworld was given a trial
basis on Wednesday to prove
itself. Let's face it,
Wednesdays are a tough sell.
Just ask Diabolik,
Whip It Good Wednesdays,
and Wierd. Sometimes
good...sometimes bad...never a
sure thing. The turnout for the
first two installments of
Underworld was
impressive...only after
midnight, though...and then it
seemed that this kick-ass party
was over all too soon. You would
think that if people in our
scene had to (Yipes!) get up
early the next day, they would
come out earlier to squeeze in a
few good party hours before
going beddy-bye! I mean, this
event starts at 10pm, for
darkness sake! It's one of the
earliest events on the roster,
and one should take advantage of
that. As I said before, this
venue and event almost seems to
be everything one would expect
out of our scene, as if
perfectly molded from every
aspect of the Gothdom. But is
that too ambitious? For a Friday
or Saturday night, not at all.
For a Bi-weekly Wednesday?
Maybe.
All in all, it's good to see DJ
Templar back in the saddle
(Yee-Haw!) and turning out
another great event to populate
and support our scene's nighttime
activities. If you haven't been
to Underworld yet, it
is something that should not be
missed, at least once...and I'm
sure that it will only get
better it gets more established
into its venue. And who knows...with
the success of the event, they
might be invited to a Bi-Weekly
Friday night time slot (wishful
thinking on my part)! |
