SKULLZIE SEZ: To
sum up this event in one word,
it would be...well...weird! Let
me explain...The first thing to
mention is that it is amazing
that this is a weekly Wednesday
event! HOORAY FOR HUMP-DAY!!!
The next thing to mention is
that located on Chrystie Street,
between Delancy & Broome
Streets, the venue feels like
it's at the edge of the
Universe, deep in the bowels of
the Lower East Side...but you
know what? That's actually cool!
Alphabet City and the E. Houston
Street area have become so
yuppified that this dark,
underground haven is just what
the witch-doctor ordered for
those nostalgic for a grittier,
seedier NYC. And speaking of the
venue...WIERD is held at Home
Sweet Home since relocating
from Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Descending one flight down to
the basement level, Home
Sweet Home is comfortably
dark and has a "Psycho" feel to
it with its stuffed animals and
displayed eccentric antiques.
Still...very cool! Described by
others as "Holier-than-thou"
because they religiously spin
vinyl, the WIERD event is the
best place for those again
nostalgic for a gothy time gone
by. This is what the scene used
to feel like...sort of. But you
must be saying to yourself, "Skullzie!
What the hell is so weird about
WIRED?" Well...to be
honest...the mix of its patrons!
Now while there is definitely a
dark element to the crowd here,
the no dress code and free
admission policy also attracts
a...how can I put this
mildly?...uhh...a more...umm...
let's just say, a more lighter
clothed, casual faction of
society (*whispers* "Day
Crawlers"). But quite
frankly, this doesn't pose a
problem. As far as I can figure
out these are probably local
regulars of Home Sweet Home
before WIERD moved in, and they
tend to congregate at the front
of the bar enjoying beer and
each other's company, while the
Darklings gravitate toward the
back half of the bar and dance
floor. It's all good! Everyone
is here for a fun, laid-back
good time...Wierdos and all! |
